Allspice Whole (Pimenta dioica) consists of the dried, unripe berries of a tropical evergreen tree native to the Caribbean and Central America. Despite its name, allspice is a single spice, not a blend, though it is famously known for having a flavor profile that resembles a combination of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
These whole berries are small, dark brown, and resemble large peppercorns. Because they are kept in their whole form, they retain their essential oils and aromatic potency much longer than ground spice. In the kitchen, whole allspice is a vital ingredient for pickling brines, marinades, and slow-simmered stews where the berries can be easily removed before serving.
Whole allspice is also a popular choice for flavoring hot beverages such as mulled cider or wine, and it serves as a key component in traditional Caribbean jerk seasonings. Its warm, earthy, and slightly peppery aroma makes it a versatile addition to any spice collection.
